Fydub – Privacy Policy

Fydub ("we", "our", or "us") is a Chrome extension that translates YouTube video audio in real time using AI-generated dubbing. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

1. Information We Collect

Fydub collects only the minimum data necessary to provide its service:

YouTube Video ID — the public identifier of the video you choose to translate (e.g. dQw4w9WgXcQ). Used solely to retrieve public subtitles.
Selected Language — the target language you choose for translation.
Anonymous Device Identifier (device_id) — a randomly generated identifier stored locally in your browser (chrome.storage.local) and in our database. It is not linked to your identity and is used solely to enforce usage limits and restore Premium access.
Technical Recovery Cookie (fydub_did) — a secure, HttpOnly cookie set by our server. It contains only your anonymous device_id and allows continuity of usage limits and Premium access across extension reinstalls within the same browser profile.
Anonymous Usage Counters — the number of seconds of translation used per day and per month, associated only with your device_id.

We do not collect your name, personal identity, browsing history, or YouTube account credentials. We do not actively collect or store IP addresses for identification purposes.

2. How We Use Your Information

The YouTube Video ID and selected language are sent to our server exclusively to:

Retrieve public subtitles from YouTube
Generate translated audio using text-to-speech
Return the translated audio to your browser

This data is processed in real time and is not stored after the request is completed.

The anonymous device_id is also sent with each request to:

Enforce free-tier limits (30 minutes/month + 5 minutes/day)
Verify Premium access
Enable account recovery

3. Third-Party Services

Fydub uses the following third-party services to operate:

YouTube Data — public subtitle data is fetched directly from YouTube's public API. We do not interact with your YouTube account.
Microsoft Edge TTS — text-to-speech audio generation. Only the translated subtitle text is sent; no personal information is included.
Google Cloud Run & Firestore — our backend infrastructure and database. The anonymous device_id and usage counters are stored here. Requests are not logged beyond standard infrastructure metrics.
Stripe — payment processing for Premium plans. Stripe handles all payment information. We receive only the email address used at checkout, solely for account recovery purposes.

4. Data Retention

Fydub does not store:

Video IDs
Subtitle content
Generated audio

However, we do store limited non-personal data in our secure database (Google Cloud Firestore), including:

Anonymous device_id
Usage counters (daily and monthly)
Email address (only for Premium users, for account recovery)

This data is used strictly to provide the service and is never sold or shared for advertising purposes.

5. Cookies and Local Storage

Fydub does not use advertising cookies, tracking cookies, analytics tools, or behavioral tracking.

However, we use:

chrome.storage.local — to store preferences (language, voice, volume) and your device_id
A strictly necessary technical cookie (fydub_did) — used only to maintain your anonymous identifier and ensure continuity of service

We do not track you across websites.

6. YouTube Page Modification

Fydub modifies the YouTube interface locally in your browser to provide its functionality. This includes:

Injecting a "Translate Video" button
Synchronizing AI-generated audio with video playback
Adjusting original video volume

These modifications occur only on your device and do not affect YouTube servers, other users, or your account.

7. Children's Privacy

Fydub is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal data from children.

8. Premium Accounts & Email

If you purchase a Premium plan, your payment email (provided via Stripe) is stored securely only to:

Restore Premium access
Handle account recovery

This email is:

Never used for marketing
Never shared with third parties
Only accessed when necessary for support

You may request deletion of your data at any time.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the extension constitutes acceptance.
